- Brown paint
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Black marker
- Small paintbrush or sponge for handprint
- Template printed out (provided right at the bottom of the post)
How to Make Your Handprint Scarecrow Craft
This craft is perfect for children of all ages, with adult help needed for cutting detailed pieces and creating the handprint.
Step 1: Create the Handprint Base

- Paint your child's hand with brown or orange paint, making sure to cover the palm and all fingers evenly.
- Press the painted hand firmly onto white construction paper, ensuring all fingers make contact.
- Allow the handprint to dry completely before cutting it out carefully around the edges.
Step 2: Cut All the Scarecrow Pieces

While the handprint dries, cut out all your scarecrow components from the provided template (provided right at the bottom of the post):
- Cut the triangle shape from brown paper for the hat
- Cut the semi-circle shape from orange paper for the hat patch
- Cut the rectangular strips from yellow paper for the straw hair (both short and long strips)
- Cut the two large circles from white paper for the eyes
- Cut the two small ovals from black paper for the pupils
- Cut small circles from the orange paper for the cheeks
Step 3: Add Character with Details

- Using a black marker, carefully outline all your cut pieces to give them definition and make them pop against each other.
- Use the black marker to draw a cheerful stitched smile with small cross-hatches, just like a real scarecrow's sewn-on smile
- With your marker create two black pupils (we left some white highlight areas in our pupils)
Step 4: Assemble Your Scarecrow Step by Step

Start building your scarecrow by gluing pieces in this order:
- First, attach the brown hat band to the brown hat
- Take each yellow hair strip and fold it accordion-style back and forth to create dimensional texture
- Glue the folded straw hair pieces to the inside or edge of the hat, letting the dimensional folds stick out in different directions for a realistic, textured straw look

- Apply glue to only the bottom section of the hair and adhere is to the handprint (we need the hair without glue so we can slip the eyes underneath it in the next step).
Step 5: Bring Your Scarecrow to Life

Add the facial features to create your scarecrow's personality:
- Glue your eyes so they sit underneath the hair pieces.
- Glue down your two circles for your cheeks.
